Volunteer
At THE REHABILITATION HOSPITAL OF RHODE ISLAND, our volunteers are exceptional people in many ways. They are people who make a difference by helping others.
You may have considered volunteering, but worried about the time it would take from your already busy schedule. All you need is a minimum time commitment of two hours per week and a strong desire to help. Volunteers make a significant difference to our patients, staff, and the hospital community.
As a volunteer, we ask that you bring the following to the position:

- Compassion for others
- Commitment of time
- A desire to learn new skills and make new friends
These traits go a long way in helping RHRI provide the highest-quality healthcare to our community and the region. From students to adults, our volunteers range in age from 14 to 90 and work in numerous departments throughout the hospital including:
- Lobby Greeters
- Therapy Areas
- Medical Records
- Nutrition
- Administrative Offices
Adult Volunteer Program
Adult volunteers are required to complete the following:
- Interview and application
- Background check
- Provide immunization documentation
- Provide a personal reference
- Attend a hospital orientation
- Commit to a minimum of 2-4 hours a week and a minimum of 45 volunteer hours.
Students - Summer & After School Volunteer Program
Students interested in volunteering at RHRI must be at least 14 years of age and students under 18 must submit a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian to participate in the program.
- Summer program lasts for 7 weeks and requires a weekly commitment of at least 4 hours and total hourly commitment of 28 hours.
- After School program requires a weekly commitment of at least 2 hours and a total hourly commitment of 45 hours during the school year.
- Letters of recommendation will be given to each student that successfully completes the program.
Students are required to complete the following:
- Interview and volunteer paperwork including signed permission slip for students under 18 years of age.
- Background check for those over 18 years of age
- Provide a personal reference (teacher/coach/supervisor)
- Provide an updated immunization record
- Undergo two tuberculosis tests
- Attend a hospital orientation
- Commit to 45 hours/school year program or 28 hours/summer program
- Adhere to uniform and dress code policies
